Slaughter Stone

Slaughter Stone
Stonehenge is full of mysteries that may never be solved. Who built it? Why did they build it, and how did they do it? For example, what sort of tendering process was used?

However, the Slaughter Stone isn't one of those mysteries. Originally thought to be used for the ritual sacrifice of virgins to welcome the summer solstice, it's now known that it's just an ex-standing stone that once stood as part of the entrance, and that the red staining is due to rain reacting with the iron ore in the stone.

Sometimes my mind approaches things from a slightly different angle to most peoples' though, so for me, the biggest mystery remains. Did it fall or was it pushed?

Like most mysteries at Stonehenge, we'll never know.

For the best and most convincing description I've read about the the who's, what's and why's of Stonehenge, I like Bernard Cornwell's book "Stonehenge: A Novel of 2000 BC". It's a fictional story, but that doesn't mean it's wrong. It will do for me until something better comes along.
