Ben Lomond Cloud Inversion
This shot was one of the first landscape photos I ever made, and possibly explains why I keep going back for more. It was Christmas Eve and I thought it would be a good idea to get out of the house, so I set out with the idea of getting some sunrise shots from Beinn Narnain. The weather was miserable though, so I settled down for a day walking in the rain and assumed the camera would stay in the bag. Just as it started getting light enough to turn my head torch off, I walked out of the clouds and developed a very silly grin when I saw that the sun was going to rise between Ben Lomond and Ben Reoch.

I've included three similar shots in my portfolio because I just can't decide which one best captures the essence of the moment. I'll leave that for you to decide. This is the second of the three, and shows the sun in the seconds before it actually appears over the horizon.

The first in the series shows a column of cloud that suddenly rose up between the two hills, and the third shows the sun just moments after it broke the clouds.

If ever I think about abandoning a day out because of the weather, I take a look at these photos again and remind myself what I might miss. The day was perfect, and has to be one of the best Christmas presents I've ever had.
